Powering Your Brain Through Food It may be common knowledge that food can genuinely make you feel better when eating properly. Even scientists in the late 1700s and 1800s believed that the stomach was “the great nervous center of the body.” But did you know that the best way to balance your brain and thoughts is through your stomach? Aside from the social media hype surrounding eating healthy and its links to mental health, the mass majority of scientists have also agreed that what you eat is directly correlated to brain function. In fact, the food you eat affects the neurons in your brain. In other words, an unhealthy diet that is fat and sugar-heavy causes inflammation of the neurons and prohibits new the formation of new ones. This can lead to many problems for your brain and can contribute to mental illness or brain disorders. Ok, we get it, this all sounds like a bunch of mumbo jumbo. So let's dive into what this means for you and your restaurants.
"You Are What You Eat"
In truth, "you are what you eat" couldn't be more accurate. Owners of restaurants are often under a ton of stress and busy nearly 24/7. Thus, eating a ton of fast food and having an unhealthy diet is only going to add to your brain pain. We all want to serve our customers a delicious, most nutritious meal to ensure they are happy. But what about ourselves? As busy as you are, you need to take care of yourself and make sure you are at the top of your game when it matters most. With the brain and gut is connected through a series of neurons, the messages from your stomach shouldn't include large amounts of unhealthy information. So what should you be eating and what should you be avoiding? Foods To Stimulate Your Brain:
Foods high in Omega-3 (walnuts, flax seeds, salmon)
Green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale, broccoli)
Berries (acai berries, strawberries, blueberries)
High Fructose Corn Syrup (sugary drinks, candy)
Foods high in Trans Fat (unhealthy snacks, microwave popcorn, fried food)
